Worst Foods

July 25th, 2011 No comments

Well, of course, the Center for Science in the Public Interest’s Nutrition Action Healthletter came out not too long ago, and the news has to make a big deal about the WORST FOODS IN AMERICA

The eight winning dishes are loaded with bacon, fried eggs and pork belly, ice cream and peanut butter, and come stuffed, fried, and accompanied by more fried things.

Hmmm, I don’t know about you, but I see three things listed that are wonderful! For the most part, it’s the “accompanied by” that makes you sick and overweight. Here are two entrees I wouldn’t mind scarfing down (with a few modifications, of course).

1. Morton’s The Steakhouse Porterhouse Steak: A hunk of aged prime beef that weighs 24 ounces before cooking. With mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. 2,570 calories, 85 grams of sat fat, and 2,980 mg of sodium. (sub the mashed tots for a salad and ditch the creamed)

4. The Cheesecake Factory Farmhouse Cheeseburger: A burger topped with grilled smoked pork belly cheddar cheese, onions, lettuce, tomato, mayo and a fried egg. 1,530 calories, 36 grams of saturated fat and 3,210 mg of sodium. (toss the mayo and bun and this sounds friggin’ awesome!)

Of course in the photo, the burger comes with fries. And CPSI is focusing on calories and fat grams.  Sure, they win there, those entrees are loaded with calories and fat, but that’s not the problem, is it?

The rest of the list, I get. Peanut Butter milkshake, pasta, cheesecake, fries, cheese melt.  But don’t invite burgers and steaks to the party!

New Recipe Video – Cauliflower Salad

July 20th, 2011 5 comments

Hey guys! As promised on my Facebook page, I made my next recipe video! This time, I’m recreating a recipe from EverydayPaleo.com. Her “No Potato” Salad – using cauliflower instead!

All you need is: cauliflower, celery, hard boiled eggs, dill pickles, red onion, and mayo

I didn’t follow the recipe exactly because, as you’ll see, the homemade mayo was pretty gross. I knew Zack and I wouldn’t eat it, so I ran to the store and bought Miracle Whip.

I’m still trying to think of ways to make my videos more interesting… but until then, here you go!

PRIMAL NUT FAIL:
here’s the making of the homemade mayo and my reaction to it :P .

Butternut Squash Fries on YouTube!

Alright, you’re not allowed to critique me too much, since this is my first video!  Plus, my nose was a little stuffy.  Hopefully next time I’ll be funnier ;) . I plan on making paleo/primal recipe videos once a week. Mostly simple and quick recipes. I plan to prove that paleo isn’t as difficult as it seems.

Be sure to rate, comment, and share with your friends!

No Soda July

July 6th, 2011 9 comments

As I mentioned in my last post, July is NO SODA MONTH!  And it’s going great so far.  No soda – which means no energy drinks too!  My plan is to carry this on throughout the year, only having the occasional soda when I’m craving something sweet.  Two things are helping me stick to it.  1) La Croix sparkling water.  I ordered 48 cans on Amazon.com for $33.  I only have 20 left :( and we’re not even half way through the month (Zack is drinking them too).

Even though that ends up more than 4 cans of La Croix per day, it’s about the same (financially) than going to the vending machine twice  a day for a $1.25 soda.

I also got a huge jug from QuikTrip that I fill with water while I’m at work.

After the major headache on the first day, I’ve been alright so far.  A little tired here and there, but nothing I can’t handle.

Have you ever given up soda, or something similar?
